Remixing my own artist website for my music producer and DJ persona Darkcore Truth was a rewarding challenge. See more about my process in this visual case study.

darkcore truth (aka “batty”) is an independent queer music producer, visual artist & DJ. They have curated parties & events in Berlin, New York, & Italy. Darkcore’s sound consists of femme-powered vocals, defibrillating kick drums, and a unique blend of pop anthem, classical influence, & industrial grit.

Darkcore Truth, aka me – “Batty” needed to design a website for my professional artist persona that would reflect the caliber of professionalism in a way that competes with mainstream techno-bro labels and producers.

I explored a number of color palettes, typography treatments, and layouts until I found a striking balance between dark & vibrant hues, powerful typography, and a contemporary composition of elements and visuals.

stepping outside of my artist persona & into my design experience allowed me to interpret my music and personal style in a visual way.

With a strong palette the next most important piece was font selection. I knew I wanted to find a typeface that felt bad-ass but also femme. After a lot of exploration I found type that had the perfect feel for large headlines and graphic typography treatments.

In order to create a beautiful site, it was important to explore a brand expression that offers the same gravity as my (Darkcore Truth’s) particular style. The site needed edge, but an expression of harmony and elegance. It all started with the development of the brand styles.

palette

Darkcore Truth’s color palette was the jump-off point for the brand aesthetic. Obviously it needed to be dark, but I wanted to pull through the boldness of my musical style as well. I landed on a neon cherry that contrasted beautifully, as well as an off-white for backgrounds and vibrant complimentary green for interactive components and accents.

Evolving upon an easy to use and widely supported web-building platform with customized code for a modern web experience, I focused on ways to bring the brand to life – rather than churning hours and burning budget on a brittle content management system.

And with less time spent on time-consuming baseline development, responsive design, and content retooling I was able to create a scalable pattern to quickly build brand intimacy and a system that works for a number of clients and artists.

To give the main CTAs a smoky and click-addicting effect, I used a CSS masking technique combined with keyframe animations
